Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Police Chief Sterling Owen dedicated a new 360 degree shooting facility for the department. The new training center is located alongside the department's firearms facility and driving track in East Knoxville.
The 360 degree shooting facility will provide a unique firearms training opportunity for KPD officers. The facility will be utilized to teach entry techniques, room clearing, search techniques, low-light activities, as well as specialized K-9 operations. This addition brings a new capability to KPD training that will allow officers to utilize their duty weapons inside a closed environment, thereby adding realism to training that will keep officers and citizens safer.
Construction on the 'shoot house' began in March of this year. The 4,947 sq. ft. facility is constructed of rifle grade steel plates covered with plywood and filled with gravel (the void between the plywood and steel catches the rounds). The walls measure 10 feet tall. The center consists of five rooms, one hallway, and one moveable wall that allows the inside configuration to be changed for various training scenarios. Any weapon in the KPD arsenal can be used safely in the facility. This facility is the only municipal agency owned 360 degree shooting facility in this part of the state (Franklin, TN is closest).
