Reference Librarians Are Now Offering One-on-one Help by Appointment

Posted: 10/27/2010
Knox County Public Library's reference department is unveiling a new service for Knox County residents - reference appointments that will offer patrons the undivided attention of a qualified reference librarian to help them with their research needs. Traditional reference services by phone, email and in-person are still available.

By making an appointment, librarians are able to schedule time away from other duties to allow one-on-one time with the patron, allowing them to continue helping as needs develop. For instance, if the patron is working on a business plan, he or she may come in needing information on population, income, and even gender statistics for the county or the metro area. But then, he or she might wonder about potential competition in the metro area or zip code. A reference librarian could guide the patron to helpful information that he or she hadn't thought to ask about, or didn't know was accessible. It's a great opportunity for a give and take discussion as the patron's plan and needs develop and change.

This service is available for all reference subjects, including working with the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection (which deals with nonprofit management and fund raising), to more general Business and Industry resources, and even online database help so patrons can learn how to search for their information most effectively.

For questions about this service, or to schedule an appointment, please contact the Reference Department at 865-215-8700.
