Knox County Public Library is encouraging readers of all ages to gear up for a summer of reading with the Summer Library Clubs. The popular programs, which rewards children, teens, and adults for reaching their reading goals, begins June 1st and continues through July 31st at all library locations. Reading goals vary depending on age, but there's a great prize waiting for everyone. Participants can check out books from the Library, read what's on their personal book shelf, or download a bestseller from the library's website: www.knoxlib.org. The kick off celebration for summer reading programs will be held from 10a.m.-3p.m. this Saturday, May 22 on World's Fair Park
Children's Summer Library Club:
Children can sign up as a Reader or a Listener. Readers read for 12 hours; Listeners (for those not quite reading yet) listen to 20 books being read to them. Every child who finishes receives an amazing prize pack full of fantastic coupons, games and more (worth $100!) as well as a fun inflatable ball.
Programs throughout the summer are scheduled to keep readers on track. Look for Magician Michael Messing, critters from the Knoxville Zoo, and interactive singalongs with Sean McCullough. All times and dates are available at
www.knoxlib.org.
Teen Summer Reading:
This summer, teens can take the challenge to read five books and reap the rewards. Register online to keep track of reading goals, then check out book reviews by other teens--and teens can leave their own recommendations! Teens who finish the reading challenge get a great rewards book including passes to area attractions and great restaurants tailored to suit their growing interests and active lifestyles. Plus three lucky teens will win a Flip video camera! Everyone who completes their reading logs is automatically entered into a drawing for one of three cameras.
All teens are invited to kick off the Teen Summer Reading program at the East Tennessee History Center on Monday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. with a visit from Suzanne Supplee, author of Artichoke's Heart, When Irish Guys are Smiling and Somebody Everybody Listens To (new this summer). Meet Suzanne and learn about all the fun to come this summer.
Adult Reading Challenge:
Summer reading programs aren't just for kids! Adults who read just 4 books win a roomy tote to carry all their favorite books. It's a great chance to discover a new author, learn more about an interesting subject, or have a great reason to start (or join) a book club! Readers can double the challenge by Walking and Reading. Check out an audiobook from the library and listen to a book while walking off the pounds.
It's easy to sign up! Children and teens can register, starting May 17th, online or at any library location (no registration is needed for the Adult Reading Challenge). Reading logs are available online or at all library locations.
To keep everyone motivated, check out the Library's event calendar at
www.knoxlib.org for fun and free summer events held throughout the county.
