Thousands Run Knoxville Marathon

Posted: 03/29/2010
Thousands of runners, including Mayor Bill Haslam, filled Knoxville's streets Saturday and Sunday as the 6th Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon attracted a record crowd of runners.

More than 5,900 runners were registered to run in one of the races during the weekend-long celebration of running and fitness that includes events ranging from the one-mile Covenant Kids Run on Saturday evening to the full 26.2-mile marathon on Sunday morning. There is also a half-marathon - the most popular race - a four-person marathon relay and a 5K race.

All the races end on the field at the University of Tennessee's Neyland Stadium.

About 900 young racers were entered in the Covenant Kids Run starting in waves arranged by age from the 11-12-year-old division down to the stroller-dominated two-and-under group. Like the other races it started on the Clinch Avenue Viaduct above World's Fair Park.

Haslam ran in the half-marathon.
