Hagerman Named Director of Engineering

Posted: 12/20/2011
Mayor Madeline Rogero today announced the appointment of Jim Hagerman, a registered Professional Engineer with experience in sustainability projects, as the Director of Engineering for the City of Knoxville. Hagerman was recently named "Engineer of the Year" for the Tennessee Valley Authority.

"I am thrilled to have someone with Jim's professional background and commitment to environmental responsibility join the administration," Mayor Rogero said. "His technical expertise and practical approach to environmental issues are invaluable."

Hagerman, who is also a certified Project Management Professional, has a long track record with TVA, where he has worked as Senior Project Manager of the Kingston Recovery Project. His role was to support strategic planning, budgeting and technical review for the cleanup of the 2008 ash spill to ensure regulatory compliance on the project.

During his time with TVA, Hagerman has also led efforts to support water quality improvement, which included analyzing data for physical, chemical, habitat and biological monitoring of streams and reservoirs. In addition, Hagerman has coordinated with municipal, state and federal agencies on water quality strategies and projects.

"This is a great opportunity to serve the community," Hagerman said. "I am looking forward to working with Mayor Rogero, who has a commitment to sustainable development and green initiatives."

Hagerman has also been a principal researcher for water quality and pollution control at TVA, where he helped to develop new watershed modeling techniques that made it easier for citizens and agencies to work together. Hagerman has an agricultural engineering degree from Oregon State University and a Master's degree in agricultural and biological engineering from Cornell University.

His interest in sustainability goes beyond his professional work and includes his role as a board member at Three Rivers Market, the North Knoxville natural foods cooperative, and a representative of the South Waterfront Brownfields Assessment. He is also active on sustainable transportation issues with the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization and the Knoxville-Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission.
