HonorAir Knoxville's 9th flight took off this morning with 129 World War II and Korean War veterans.

The Veterans will spend the day visiting memorials of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Marine, Air Force, Navy as well as viewing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The flight is due back at 8 p.m. tonight at McGhee Tyson Airport.

HonorAir Knoxville's goal is to fly as many East Tennessee World War II and Korean War veterans as possible to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor. Currently, we are only accepting veterans from Knox, Anderson, and Blount counties. There is a narrow window of opportunity to accomplish this task.

According to the Department of Veterans Affair:

Sixteen million Americans served in World War II. There are approximately a little more than 3 million veterans alive. Every day we lose approximately 1,200 World War II veterans. In another five to ten years almost all WWII veterans will be gone.
