Mayor to Attend Austin-East UPSIDE Project

Posted: 05/10/2011
Mayor Daniel Brown will attend the advanced computer-aided drafting course at Austin-East Magnet High School at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 13.

The students (about a dozen in this class) will present the housing designs they have developed with the help of fifth-year University of Tennessee architecture students

This project is part of the UT College of Architecture's UPSIDE (Urban Program in Sustainable Design Education) project created by UT Professor David Fox.

The collaborative program features Austin-East students - working with UT architecture students - to design multi-family housing employing sustainable design and building practices. They are using the latest computer design technologies available online as part of this effort. The class is taught Ronald Logan, A-E's computer-aided drafting and principles of engineering teacher, and Intern Alana Hibbler.

The class gives the Austin-East students an opportunity to become involved in a real-world design process as well as giving them insight into how architects and engineers do their work. At the same time it gives the UT students - who will have to work with the public during their careers - a chance to get out of the classroom and use their skills to help someone else.

For more information about Friday's presentation or the project, please contact Ronald Logan, computer-aided drafting and principles of engineering instructor at Austin East Magnet High School at 594-3687 or [email protected] or UT Architecture Professor David Fox at 865-300-3861 or [email protected].
