Today Mayor Brown and Knox County Mayor Burchett joined the Knox County School Board, Knox County Commission, Knoxville City Council, City of Farragut and Knoxville Chamber of Commerce to sign a resolution stating the following:
"We support the goal of having 90% of our students reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade, and
We urge parents and caregivers to read aloud with their children at least 20 minutes a day from birth."
Resolution signed by members from the Knox County School Board, Knox County Commission, Knoxville City Council, City of Farragut and Knoxville Chamber of Commerce
This resolution was presented in honor of the "Read with your Child" campaign that was lauched by the Children's Reading Foundation.
Tennessee's First Lady Crissy Haslam was the keynote speaker at the event stressing the importance of teaching our children to read.
The “Read with your Child” campaign seeks to empower parents to impact their child’s success in school by reading to them a minimum of 20 minutes per day. The goal of the campaign is to cultivate a culture in the Knox County community where children learn to read well by the end of third grade. The Children’s Reading Foundation will accomplish this by providing education and encouragement to parents (and caregivers) on their important role in raising a reader.
Research tells us that children who read at or above grade level by the end of third grade have a far better chance for success in school and life.
The children of our community are our most precious resource, and our children's education is the key to their success in life.
