Recycling Center Closing

Posted: 06/20/2011
The Food City grocery store on Alcoa Hwy will be closing on July 5, 2011. The City of Knoxville Drop Off Recycling Center at that location will be closing the same week.

As an option to the Drop Off Center, the City is providing to it's residents a Curbside Recycling Program as of October 1, 2011. Those city residents in the area of the Alcoa Hwy Food City Recycling Center are encouraged to take advantage of the program, as well as all City of Knoxville households that receive weekly household trash pick up, by calling 311 or sign up on the web at www.doyourpartwiththecart.org.

Until October 1st city residents in the area of the Alcoa Hwy Food City can take their recyclable materials to the Downtown Recycling Center at 400 State St. or utilize any of the city's recycling centers listed in this release to the right.

The single-stream, curbside model makes recycling as easy as throwing away the trash since residents would no longer have to separate recyclable items or drive to a recycling center. Instead they would simply place the recyclable materials into a single container, supplied by the city, and it would be picked up every two weeks by the city's contractor at the curb.

The new City Curbside Recycling program is no charge to residents and will only be offered to the first 20,000 households that sign up. As of Monday, June 20, 13,344 households have signed up for the curbside recycling program. The city has been working for several years to develop a city-wide curbside recycling program in response to citizen requests for it and to reduce the amount of material going into the landfill.
