In anticipation of the storm projected to hit East Tennessee on Friday morning, City of Knoxville crews are pre-treating local roads with brine to protect against ice.
City officials will be available to talk about the storm preparations at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. today (Thursday) at the salt bin behind the Loraine Street complex.
Here is a timeline of the plan for Thursday evening and Friday morning:
Today (Thursday): Crews have been brining Level I and II streets, major and secondary roads as defined in the City's Snow Plan, since mid-morning. They have already used approximately 12,000 gallons of brine and will continue pre-treating streets until approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday. They will then pause during Thursday evening rush hour.6:30 p.m. Crews resume brining streets all evening and into the morning hours, attempting to cover all Level I/II and as many Level III streets as possible. 3 a.m. Friday: Crews will return to the City's operations center to top off salt trucks. 4:30 a.m. Friday: Crews will deploy to staging areas throughout the City at approximately 4:30 a.m. to await the storm.
Storm response will depend on actual circumstances in the field, but it will follow the City's Snow Plan, with salt trucks covering Level I and II streets first and responding to assistance calls from emergency response partners. City departments will coordinate directly with KUB, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and other partner agencies throughout the response.
