Title VI Symposium Set for Sept. 19

A free Title VI Symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on September 19th at the Knoxville Convention Center.

The event is sponsored by City of Knoxville, Knox County Government, Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority, Tennessee Department of Transportation Civil Rights Office, Tennessee Department of Workforce and Development (Knoxville Regional Office) and University of Tennessee (Knoxville Office of Equity and Diversity).

The day-long symposium will include in-depth discussions regarding Limited English Proficiency, participation of Disadvantage Business Enterprise, and Title VI accountability requirements from all phases to include local and state government, education, airport authority, contractors, subcontractors, and grant recipients. Recipients of local, state, and federal funds are strongly encouraged to attend and upon completion of the training will receive training certificates.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, states that "no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." 42 U.S.C. section 2000 et seq.

The presenters are Federal and State officials from the US Department of Transportation Civil Rights Office and the Tennessee Human Rights Commission.
