The City of Knoxville has launched a web page to help start a community-wide conversation on traffic calming and neighborhood traffic safety: www.knoxvilletn.gov/trafficcalming.
In addition, the first of five public meetings on traffic calming will be held this coming Monday, Sept. 16th, at Church of the Good Shepherd, 5337 Jacksboro Pike. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the meeting gets under way at 5:30 p.m.
At this and four public meetings to follow, city officials will make presentations about traffic calming and record the comments, questions, ideas and concerns of city residents and representatives of city neighborhood groups.
The City encourages citizens to visit and explore the new web page to become familiar with the concept of traffic calming and the issues surrounding it. The site includes a policy review timeline, a definition of traffic calming, a list of physical traffic calming devices appropriate for local neighborhood streets, an outline of the City's current practices with regard to residential traffic safety, a list of web-based resources, results of a survey of how Knoxville's peer cities in the Southeast handle traffic calming, and results of a telephone poll of Knoxville residents.
In addition, the site offers a variety of ways citizens can provide input. The information collected will be used to consider possible changes in the City's traffic calming policy, with a follow-up public meeting in early 2014.
A reference desk "hard copy" of all resources on the web page will be available for viewing at the downtown (Lawson McGee) library as well as the Bearden, Burlington, Fountain City, Norton and South Knoxville branches. Call the Office of Neighborhoods at 215.3456 for more information.
