February 20, 2014 - By 4 p.m. this afternoon, West Jackson Avenue between Gay and Henley streets is scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic for the first time since a Feb. 1 fire destroyed the McClung Warehouses buildings in the 500 block.
The road will be reopened to two lanes of traffic - one in each direction, the same as before the fire.
Jackson Avenue also is open to pedestrians. City crews in coming weeks will be making improvements to the south sidewalk, which sustained some damage during the operations after the fire.
The City will be redeveloping all of the properties it owns on Jackson Avenue, acquired in November 2013 in a settlement with a bankruptcy trustee. Following a public input process, the City is hopeful that a developer or developers may be able to assume ownership of the properties by the end of the year.
