December 12, 2014 - Beginning Sunday night, December 14, KUB and its contractor, Utility Services, will begin routine testing of the fire hydrants located in the downtown Knoxville area.
This work will be conducted nightly from 12-6 a.m., starting Sunday night, December 14, through Monday, December 22, (weather permitting). Crews will not performing testing Friday, December 19, or Saturday, December 20. Also, if temperatures should fall below 35 degrees, crews will not perform the overnight testing.
There will be no water outages associated with this work, although some loss of pressure may be experienced for a short period of time during the testing. Those in the area will also see water being released from the hydrants, as well as water on streets and sidewalks in the downtown area. The contractor will take precautions to minimize the noise levels associated with this work and the equipment being used, particularly in areas with nearby residences.
Crews will test approximately 200 fire hydrants throughout the downtown Knoxville area. KUB is responsible for more than 8,000 fire hydrants within its service territory, and this work is part of KUB's routine testing and inspection program. This work has been coordinated with the Knoxville Fire Department.
