Public Service Crews to Pre-Treat Streets Saturday

Posted: 01/03/2014
January 3, 2014 - Knoxville dodged a weather bullet Friday, with little snow or ice accumulating. But City of Knoxville Public Service Department crews on Saturday will be readying for the potential winter weather that's forecast to come Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

Public Service workers, who treated Knoxville roads Thursday night and early Friday morning with rock salt, will go home and rest Friday evening, with teams returning Saturday to pre-treat main high-traffic Level I and connector Level II streets and possibly some key neighborhood Level III streets with liquid salt brine.

Some streets will have remnant rock salt and not require much liquid brine, but with frigid temperatures setting in, pre-treating is the best option for being prepared for winter weather, says Public Service Director David Brace.

Meanwhile, the City has plenty of salt on hand - with new supplies coming in early next week.

"Our salt supplies are scheduled to be resupplied starting Monday morning," he said. "We still have approximately 1,800 tons in reserve."
