From 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 5, more than 100 University of Tennessee students will be participating in the first annual Sustainability Day of Service, helping to clean up and beautify local public spaces.

Service sites include: Fountain City Elementary School, Inskip Park, Kickstand Bike Collective, Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, the Knoxville Zoo, and Project V.E.G.G.I.E. on UT's campus. Students will be doing grounds clean-up, invasive species removal, planting both food and flowers, working on bicycles, and much more.

The Sustainability Day of Service is sponsored by UT's Center for Leadership and Service, the UT Student Government Association, and the UT Office of Sustainability. It is being coordinated collaboratively by Sarah Guy, an AmeriCorps VISTA member, working with the City of Knoxville Office of Sustainability and UT's Service-Learning Program on issues of food access, and Sally Parish, Director of the Center for Leadership & Service.

Although UT's Center for Leadership and Service hosts many service days, this will be the first with a sustainability focus.

One particularly noteworthy project will be at Inskip Park. Amanda Opolski, an AmeriCorps CAC member working with the City of Knoxville's Parks and Recreation Department, will be working with students to clear a youth disc golf course which will be opened later this month.
