Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Chief David Rausch today named Julia Small the January Employee of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department. Ms. Small oversees the Technical Services Unit and has been with KPD since January 2014.
In early January it was announced that President Barak Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were scheduling a visit to East Tennessee on January 9, 2015. The United States Secret Service requested the assistance of local law enforcement in all aspects of protection of the President and Vice President. Due to planned multiple stops in multiple counties by the President and Vice President, more than twelve separate law enforcement agencies would be involved in protection duties. Ms. Small, along with her counterparts with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Knox County Emergency Management, was tasked with creating a seamless communication system for the motorcade’s 75-mile round trip.
Chief Rausch said, “For three days Ms. Small tested all areas along the motorcade route while coordinating with all locally involved agencies to assure the Secret Service there would be no issues with their communications and coordination efforts during the President’s visit. True to her word, communications during the visit worked flawlessly.”
Several times during the visit local law enforcement leaders were complimented by a surprised Secret Service on the effectiveness of our efforts.
Chief Rausch said, “It was clear that the Secret Service was impressed with one agent saying they wished all agencies and systems worked as well as ours did during such an important event.”
