Anticipate Temporary Cumberland Ave. Lane Closures Today

Posted: 11/23/2015
From 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, anticipate temporary lane closures and traffic pattern shifts as crews mill and overlay Cumberland Avenue between 22nd Street and University Commons Way.

At least one east and west bound lane will be maintained open at all times during the work, part of the Phase I reconstruction of Cumberland Avenue. Watch for flagmen and/or barrels today, as the Phase I work – which has improved traffic flow between the Alcoa Highway ramps and 22nd Street – nears completion.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Cumberland Avenue Corridor:

• Unrelated construction will close White Avenue between 17th and 18th streets today through Wednesday.

• Installation of gas valves will close 20th Street at Cumberland Avenue through 6 p.m. today. Entrances to the nearby Shell station will remain open.

• Starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, North 19th Street will be closed between Cumberland and White avenues as crews install a new sewer main. The closures will continue through 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7.

The City of Knoxville’s overall $17 million Cumberland Avenue reconstruction, scheduled to be completed in August 2017, will change the existing four-lane street on the eastern end of the corridor to a three-lane cross section with a raised median and left-turn lanes at intersections between 22nd Street and 17th Street.

On the western end of Cumberland, synchronized traffic flow at Metron Center Way and a dedicated turn lane onto northbound Alcoa Highway are lessening decades-long issues with congestion.

In both the Phase I and Phase II projects, Cumberland Avenue sidewalks are being widened, and utility infrastructure relocated and upgraded, to create a more attractive, safer, pedestrian-friendly corridor.
