Arrest of Career Criminal Earns Officer Award

Posted: 02/04/2015
Mayor Rogero, Officer Cox, Chief RauschKnoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch named Knoxville Police Department Officer Sue Cox the August Officer of the Month. Officer Cox has been with the department since August 1998.

Chief Rausch said that Officer Cox had been assigned to investigate multiple car burglary incidents where wallets and purses were being stolen from vehicles while parked in local parks and fitness centers. A possible description of the suspect's vehicle was the only immediate information available concerning the suspect. Officer Cox began tracking down numerous surveillance videos and credit card transactions to help identify the suspect. Officer Cox was able to confirm the identity of the suspect after the suspect used his personal rewards card when he made a purchase with a stolen credit card.

A few days after identifying the suspect, Officer Cox spotted the suspect's vehicle while on her way home from work. Officer Cox watched as the suspect pulled into a parking lot of a fitness club where previous thefts had occurred. With assistance from another officer, Officer Cox was able to take the suspect into custody.

Chief Rausch said, "The arrest of the suspect cleared sixteen (16) cases, which included vehicle burglaries, thefts, and unauthorized use of credit cards. The removal of this offender from our streets had an immediate impact on our crime rate and allowed citizens to once again enjoy our parks."
