Bridge Replacement on Westland Drive will Require Lane, Road Closures

Posted: 03/17/2015
A bridge replacement and road improvements to Westland Drive during the next six months will require lane and road closures at various times along the road between South Northshore Drive and Morrell Road.

Westland Drive Road ClosureThe Westland Drive Drainage & Bridge Improvements Project is scheduled to begin Monday, March 23. The duration of the project is 180 calendar days. The work consists of replacing the box culvert bridge on Westland Drive just east of Craigland Court, channel improvements, and utility relocations -- along with roadway improvements on Westland Drive near Rotherwood Drive.

In an effort to minimize the flooding of Westland Drive near Craigland Court, the existing drainage channel along Westland Drive will be improved. The improvements include the widening of approximately 1,000 feet of the existing channel. To improve traffic safety, the new drainage channel will be shifted farther north, away from the westbound travel lane of Westland Drive, in order to provide a 10-foot shoulder along Westland Drive from Craigland Court to Craig Road.

One-lane closures during the hours of 9 a.m.-3 p.m. are expected along sections of Westland Drive between South Northshore Drive and Morrell Road throughout the duration of the project.

In addition, Westland Drive will be completely closed to through traffic between South Northshore Drive and Morrell Road for 60 days beginning Monday, May 11, to allow for the replacement of the box culvert bridge. The detour route for the road closure will be Northshore Drive to Morrell Road to Westland Drive.

The exact point of closure will be the bridge nearest Craigland Court. During the closure, motorists from Northshore Drive will be able to access Kingsford Way and the eastern end of Sherwood Drive, and Craigland Court residents will have access via Westland Drive to the west.

To discourage cut-through traffic on neighborhood streets, temporary speed humps will be installed on Craig Road, Sherwood Drive, and Stone Mill Drive.
