KUB and its contractor will close sections of two City of Knoxville greenways located on the University of Tennessee campus as the natural gas distribution system in the area is upgraded over the next several months. This work will be weather permitting, and will not impact both greenways at once.
The first greenway closure involves a 2500-foot section of the Neyland Greenway between Third Creek and Joe Johnson Drive near the UT Botanical Gardens and UT Veterinarian Hospital from June 15 through early August. A detour will be set up along Joe Johnson Drive to bypass the closed section and connect the Third Creek and Neyland Greenways.
The second greenway closure involves a 2000-foot section of the Third Creek Greenway running from the area behind University Commons, through the UT Rugby Field area, and up to the culvert at the greenway entrance to Tyson Park. This section of greenway will be closed from early August through early September. A detour of this greenway will be provided along Joe Johnson Drive to Neyland Drive, across Kingston Pike, and connecting to the Third Creek Greenway on Concord Street.
The following parking areas and roadways will also be impacted at various times throughout the project, including lane and road closures as well as traffic detours. These specific closures will be communicated in advance and coordinated with UT Parking and Facility Services.
• Parking area below TVA Greenhouses on the Agriculture Campus
• Agriculture Campus Parking lot on Neyland Drive
• Morgan Circle
• iver Drive
• Joe Johnson Drive
• Jacobs Drive
• Stephenson Lane
• Joan Cronan Way
The time frames for work and closures affecting both sections of these greenways are estimates, and may be impacted by conditions encountered during construction, as well as weather. KUB will issue follow up advisories for any work requiring the closure of either section of greenway beyond the communicated time frames.
To familiarize greenway users with the upcoming changes, signage will be placed at key locations along the entire stretch of affected greenway and the detour routes beginning on Friday, June 12. The impacted sections of greenway will be closed continuously throughout the duration of the work in each area. KUB asks park patrons to please respect the signage and barricades in place, and to avoid this section of greenway due to ongoing excavation, as well as the presence of construction equipment, vehicles, and workers.
