Community Dashboard on Homelessness Launched

Posted: 04/12/2016
The City of Knoxville Office on Homelessness and the Knoxville Homeless Management Information System (KnoxHMIS) have launched an interactive website providing the community with at-a-glance detailed information on homelessness in Knoxville.

This Community Dashboard on Homelessness website was developed in response to Mayor Madeline Rogero’s Plan to Address Homelessness (PDF file). Primarily, the Community Dashboard on Homelessness reports data on population demographics and the performance of homeless service providers, with specified benchmarks and outcomes.

KnoxHMIS spearheaded this project, serving in its role as the community’s database for coordination among area homeless service providers. Administered and operated by the University of Tennessee’s College of Social Work and Social Work Office of Research and Public Service, KnoxHMIS serves as the empirical window into homelessness and the efforts to address this issue in our community.

In operation since 2004, KnoxHMIS currently serves 20 area homeless service providers. Representatives of the Mayor’s Roundtable on Homelessness, the Knoxville-Knox County Homeless Coalition, and KnoxHMIS Community Partners provided input and feedback for the development of the Community Dashboard on Homelessness.

Data provided through the Dashboard is reported quarterly, with a July to June reporting year. The graphically represented information is aggregated client-level data drawn from KnoxHMIS, with individual identifying information removed.

Dashboard data includes:

• Homeless counts (total served, new to homelessness, and at-risk of homelessness);
• Causes of homelessness;
• Housing outcomes (time to housing, length of housing, housing placements, shelter recidivism);
• Shelter bed utilization; and
• Special population information (veterans, families and youth homelessness).
