Voters in the Aug. 29 primary and Nov. 7 general election will be electing five new City Council members – a majority of the seats on the nine-member Council. Mayor Rogero and members of the current City Council are encouraging voters to get to know the candidates and their issues, engage in the election process, and go vote.

The Go Vote! Knoxville series of public meetings prior to the Aug. 29 primary is winding down. But attendees at next week’s two public meetings can register to vote at either meeting and meet the July 31 deadline for registering as a new voter and being eligible to cast a ballot in the Aug. 29 primary.

The Go Vote! Knoxville initiative includes a series of six public meetings, one in each of the six City Council districts. The first of these meetings was held in South Knoxville’s 1st District on July 10. (The final meet-up will be held Sept. 7 in the 5th District, which doesn’t have a primary election this year. The Sept. 7 gathering will feature the primary winners in the other five districts who will be running citywide in the general election.)

At these community meetings, Mayor Rogero, current Council members and neighborhood leaders are talking about this year’s elections and how citizens can get involved in shaping Knoxville’s future.

The City and local businesses will provide free pizza and snacks at these public meetings. Family-friendly games and activities will be offered, so bring the children. The Knox County Election Commission will provide voter information and register new voters. The League of Women Voters will offer a civics quiz for prizes.

Council candidates will be introduced, and voters will have opportunities to talk one-on-one with them.
