City of Knoxville offices will be closed for the national holidays of Christmas Day (Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018), and New Year’s Day (Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019). Additionally, Knoxville Area Transit buses and trolleys will not run on these holidays.
Other than these two dates, there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of City services.
Whether you’re looking to get some last-minute shopping finished up or enjoy some of downtown’s many Christmas activities, KAT will get you there. Buses and trolleys will run on Saturday schedules on Monday, Dec. 24, and on regular Monday schedules on Monday, Dec. 31.
There will be no household garbage or recycling collection on Tuesday, Dec. 25. But there are ways to reduce your holiday waste – and also options for extra holiday waste being collected in the upcoming week. For tips on how to cut down on waste by recycling and donating gently used items, please visit www.knoxvilletn.gov/recyclingguide.
Holiday recycling is extended to unwanted live Christmas trees. If you’re a City of Knoxville resident, you can place bare trees at the curb for Public Service workers to collect as time and resources allow during the ongoing leaf collection season. There’s also the opportunity to take Christmas trees to Knox County Convenience Centers for recycling. Knox County Convenience Centers do not accept waste from businesses, commercial institutions or nonprofit organizations.
If your regular curbside collection day falls on a Tuesday, be sure to have your garbage and recycling containers placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Waste Connections crews will collect Tuesday trash on Wednesday, Wednesday trash on Thursday, and so on.
Properly bagged excess holiday household trash and broken-down cardboard placed next to full garbage carts will also be collected after Dec. 25.
If your house falls on the Tuesday curbside collection schedule, you may want to put your carts to the curb before heading out to that New Year’s Eve party. Garbage and recycling will be collected as regularly scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 1, and must be put out by 7 a.m. in order to guarantee pickup.
Not enrolled in the City’s curbside recycling program? The City’s recycling centers will be open for recycling use, though unstaffed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday, Jan. 1. The Goodwill attendant will only be available for household donations for the first half of the day on Monday, Dec. 24, and Goodwill donations cannot be made on Tuesday Dec. 25, or Tuesday, Jan. 1.
The City’s Solid Waste Management Facility, 1033 Elm St., will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, with normal hours resuming on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Likewise, the facility will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1, and normal hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Still needing to make room after the holidays? “Free for City Residents” day at the City’s Solid Waste Management Facility will take place on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 (held regularly on the first Saturday of the month). This service is for City of Knoxville residents only – no commercial construction waste will be accepted.
