The Knoxville Community Band will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Tennessee Amphitheatre at World’s Fair Park.

The program includes old favorites as well as other pieces that may not be as recognizable.

Fans of the 1975 film “Rocky” will recognize “Rocky on Broadway,” including “Gonna Fly Now,” “Fight from the Heart” and “Eye of the Tiger.”

“The Beach Boys Greatest Hits” – with iconic sounds that echo 1960s surf culture – includes a medley of “California Girls,” “Good Vibrations,” “Surfer Girl,” “Wouldn't It Be Nice” and “I Get Around.”

Songs from the 1957 Broadway musical “The Music Man” also will make an appearance with “Seventy-Six Trombones” and “Till There Was You.”

The concert will even feature a bit of Spanish flair with “Amparito Roca,” a Spanish march.

The Knoxville Community Band is directed by Larry Hicks, retired band director of Heritage High School in Blount County. Mark Boring, also retired from the Blount County school system, is the assistant band director. The band is comprised of instrumentalists in the community who like to play, and most have been playing since grammar school. All are volunteers, and all play because they love music.

The band is sponsored by the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department. The group plays year round at festivals and performs a series of summer outdoor concerts. 

New members with expertise on wind or percussion instruments are welcome at practices held 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Northwest Middle School.
