Solid Waste Management Facility to Reopen Mar. 17, 2018

Posted: 03/16/2018
The City of Knoxville’s Solid Waste Management Facility will reopen at 8 a.m. tomorrow, March 17, after a fire in one of its garbage pits Thursday night. City crews have been on site today cleaning and assessing the damage from the fire.

The facility, located at 1033 Elm St., will operate as usual on Saturday, but one compactor is down from damage to its electrical system, so customers may experience longer wait times than usual.

The cause of the fire in the garbage pit Thursday night has not been determined. Knoxville Fire Department crews were on site at the facility Thursday night from about 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., when the fire was completely extinguished.

The Solid Waste Management Facility is where individuals and businesses can dispose of a wide variety of solid waste materials: tires (limit of only 4 a day), building materials, construction / demolition debris, and most other materials not permitted in daily garbage collections.
