On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief Eve Thomas presented Sgt. Tammy Mattina with a Community Service Award.
Rarely does an organization hit a home run in the assignment of personnel as the Knoxville Police Department did when Sergeant Tammy Mattina was assigned as the leader of the Safety Education Unit. Since her transfer from CID, Sgt. Mattina has been a driving force and innovator in KPD’s outreach to the community.
Some of the activities and initiatives Mattina has been involved in over the past 5 years include:
• National award winning KPD Anti-Bullying program
• KPD “if you can read, you can be…” Literacy Program
• KPD ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
• “Straight Talk” at Austin East High School
• Dance performance at Austin East High School
• Teal Pumpkin Challenge
• Coffee with a Cop
• Safety City Christmas
• Partnership with Children’s Hospital of East Tennessee
As Sgt. Mattina was overseeing and innovating these programs, she was also leading a Safety Education Unit that provides education and services to thousands of people annually, and she was developing and overseeing an overhaul of the curriculum and facilities at Safety City.
