Beginning Monday, May 4, 2020, motorists in the Old Sevier Neighborhood should anticipate the start of a series of temporary lane closures and short detours.
However, the short-term minor inconveniences reflect major reinvestment in the neighborhood: Dominion Development Group is building the $14 million City South mixed-use project at the southwest corner of Sevier Avenue and Davenport Road, and as part of the redevelopment will be constructing new public infrastructure – sidewalks, underground electric, lighting and landscaping.
The public improvements are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020.
City South will include 117 residential units and 3,500 square feet of ground-level retail space.
“This is the latest private-public partnership in the South Waterfront Redevelopment District,” said Redevelopment Director Dawn Michelle Foster. “It will add to the new and growing ‘Main Street’ vibe along Sevier Avenue.”
Starting Monday, weather permitting, portions of Davenport Road between Sevier Avenue and Gertrude Avenue will be closed daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. as development team construction crews begin installing new utilities for KUB, AT&T and Comcast as well as new street lights along the west side of Davenport Road.
Detours will be placed to guide motorists through the construction and work zone area. Motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution while driving through the work zone.
The contractor is anticipating completion of the work on Davenport Road in about three weeks. Then, in the near future, a second phase of utility upgrades will be performed along Sevier Avenue.
