The City of Knoxville seeks residents who have disabilities or particular experience with disability issues to apply to serve on the Mayor's Council on Disability Issues (CODI). The deadline for applications is Monday May 2, 2022.
Created in 1984, CODI consists of nine to 21 individuals who meet monthly and provide information to City administration on current events or concerns within the disability community. Members serve terms of three years. At least 50 percent of CODI members have a disability.
The Council includes several committees that allow members to focus on various issues concerning disability and accessibility in our community, including:
•
universal design, focused on increasing Knoxville’s stock of affordable and accessible housing;
•
livability, focused on accessible public spaces such as parks and facilities; and
•
transportation, focused on safe and accessible pedestrian amenities such as sidewalks, curb ramps and public transportation.
“The City of Knoxville values the contributions of a diverse community,” says ADA Coordinator Stephanie Brewer Cook. “CODI desires to have a vastly diverse disability representation to ensure that the issues important to all are given an opportunity to be heard and addressed.”
To round out the representation of current CODI membership, the council seeks individuals who have a visual disability, an intellectual or developmental disability, or who have a mental health diagnosis.
“This is a great opportunity to advocate for others, to serve the community, and keep making Knoxville a truly Disability- and Age-friendly city,” Cook adds.
