On Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, at 12 p.m., families of road crash victims and street safety advocates will gather at Market Square to commemorate World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims and to call for safe streets in Knoxville and increased awareness and sensitivity in discussing the epidemic of road crashes.
The event being hosted by Bike Walk Knoxville and Bike Walk Tennessee, is one of hundreds happening across the U.S., which is experiencing a 16-year high in roadway deaths – and the highest number of deaths amongst people walking in 40 years.
In the last five years, more than 1,200 friends, neighbors, and family members in Knoxville have had their lives changed forever due to crashes that resulted in a fatality or serious injury. The City of Knoxville has adopted Vision Zero, setting the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities on city-controlled roads by 2040.
At Sunday's event, a memorial will be installed, and speakers will call for safe streets in Knoxville and increased awareness and sensitivity in discussing the epidemic of road crashes.
Traffic deaths are a leading cause of preventable deaths, disproportionately harming people who are walking and biking, people of color and people in low-income communities. In Knoxville, we are calling for increased media sensitivity around the crisis of road crashes in our community, and asking everyone to take the
“Crash Not Accident” pledge.
