Urban Wilderness Gateway Park: 'It's What We Do'
Once the construction is done, and the trails and roads have been built, the utilities installed, it may look simple after the fact to have built a new park from the ground up.
But in actuality, it took a dedicated team of City problem-solving engineers to get the job done.
"Issues come up in the field, and it requires everyone pulling together to get it right," says Engineering Manager Robin Tipton. “It takes a group effort to make sure something works in the field."
It takes a survey team, public works doers, innovators and managers, and inspectors.
As Engineering Inspector Andrew Luttrell put it: "Our job is to take a set of plans, smooth out the details when needed, and do the job on time and within budget. It's what we do."

Four Knoxville Firefighters Receive Promotions
Back in July, Knoxville Firefighters Ryan Reid, Melody Weyant, Justin Bailey, and Brandon Phillips joined colleagues and family members at the KFD training facility for a promotion ceremony. Promotions are held when positions need to be filled.
In 2014, now Capt. Reid was part of the Station 11 crew that responded to a fire at an assisted living facility and helped save a woman’s life. Reid told the News Sentinel: “It’s a very rewarding job, especially in situations like this. Knowing that the actions you took influenced somebody else’s life, and in this situation, saved somebody’s life.”
Nobody Knows the City Like Codes
There are the overgrown ones. The ones surrounded by trash. The ones that used to be something but it's hard tell exactly what. And the ones that, after years of trouble, get a new lease on life.
These are the houses in Codes Enforcement Officer Beth Goodman's neighborhoods.

Among us is a City of Knoxville employee who has lived in East Tennessee for 37 years.
He’s been with the City for nine and a half years. His first paying job was bussing tables at a Pizza Hut in Panama City Beach, Florida. His diverse work experience includes managing a cemetery and refurbishing swimming pool heating systems.
His favorite food is dark chocolate, but you might guess it was Magpies’ thumbprint cookies from his habit of sharing them so generously with colleagues.
Can you guess the identity of this month’s mystery employee?
