The Music Returns to World’s Fair Park!
Five free twilight concerts. Happy families and music lovers, spread out on green grass, blankets and chairs, enjoying the summer nights and the downtown vibe.
It’s what the City envisioned when it invested $2.5 million to renovate the Performance Lawn at the south end of World’s Fair Park.
But the beautifully revamped event venue had barely reopened in mid-2019 before the pandemic hit. Then, for a year, concerts and large public gatherings were forced to cancel to safeguard public health.
So the early to mid-July 2021 Concerts in the Park series was many things – a celebration, a triumphant post-COVID return to normalcy, a chance to savor a range of cool jazz, roots-rock and yacht rock music.
See photos from the concerts and get the lowdown on what went into bringing music back to World’s Fair Park.

With the number of COVID cases ticking back up, the CDC is reminding people: If you are not vaccinated, find a vaccine at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/index.html
Also, keep in mind while vaccines are not required for City employees, they are highly encouraged! In fact, you are eligible for a $100 bonus if you submit proof of your vaccine.
Director of Benefits and Risk Management Christine Stickler walks us through the simple process.

Kid A’ Riffic Brings Hundreds of Families to City Parks
“I’m bored!” is a phrase uttered by no child during Kid A’Riffic Fun in the Park events held this summer.
The free events were held Wednesdays in June and July at different City parks, presenting youngsters ages 2-10 with fun activities and games, as well as some treats. The Office of Special Events collaborated with the Parks and Recreation Department and Public Service, as well as multiple community groups and sponsors, to host events that drew as many as 300 kids a week. Communication’s Summer in the City intern Kevin Farmer assisted in each event and shared his perspective on the successful series in this article.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it a challenge for many new City employees to get to know their colleagues. We’re doing our part this month by making introductions to City Matters readers.
She’s new to the City of Knoxville but has lived in East Tennessee for 21 years.
Her first “real job” was for an ecology organization, chasing turtles, salamanders, snakes and other woodland creatures in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
She has about 100 houseplants.
And her favorite food is apple pie.
