Office of Community Safety Empowers Knoxville Youth
For many of us at the City, Spring Break is a time to enjoy family or watch the “out of office” emails pile up from vacationing colleagues.
For dozens of Knoxville teens, however, the week-long break from school meant being involved in activities designed to connect them to a safe community and future opportunities free from violence. That and put cash in their pockets.
Thanks to the efforts of our Office of Community Safety and several youth-serving nonprofits, Knoxville youth stayed engaged with jobs and projects when school is out of session. That engagement is a strong factor – one of many -- in preventing youth violence.
Earlier this month, groups of Knoxville youth cleaned up a historic Black cemetery, learned about West African drumming and dancing, and did team-building activities that looked suspiciously like having fun.
Read more about how Community Safety grants reached into the community to serve our young people during spring break.

How often do you look at your cell phone, check your email, or log on to the City’s intranet to request time off?
Chances are you do one or more of these things every day, if not several times a day.
That’s why keeping your accounts up-to-date and staying on top of rapidly changing technology is more important than ever!
Chief Technology Officer Mark Parker has several important updates that could change how you work, in this month’s Need To Know.

City Offers CPR, 'Stop the Bleed' Training
Suppose you could gain the skill and knowledge that would enable you to save a life. Wouldn't it be worth an hour of your time?
Last month, three City departments - Community Safety, Neighborhood Empowerment and Fire - offered free Hands-Only CPR and "Stop the Bleed" workshops at the City's Larry Cox Senior Center.
The initial classes drew dozens of enthusiastic and altruistic participants. Big things have small beginnings: Organizers predict the program eventually will grow to surpass the attendance for certified CPR classes, which numbered more than 2,500 students last year.
University of Tennessee Baker Center Fellow Lillian Marcum, who is interning this semester in the Communications Department, took a closer look at his new City initiative.
Great Team Throws Party for Good Neighbors
Kudos to our Office of Neighborhood Empowerment staff for throwing a great party to honor individual neighbors and neighborhoods!
The first Neighborhood Awards Dinner, held March 2, was a cozy, celebratory event that received high marks from attendees. Mayor Kincannon shared emcee duties with event coordinator Courtney Durrett and Neighborhood Coordinator Debbie Sharp. Awards handed out during the night’s program include Officer Liaison of the Year to Seth Blaine, who was nominated by the Fourth and Gill Neighborhood. And Vestal neighbor Eric Johnson was named the Diana Conn Good Neighbor of the Year.
Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who made the dinner a huge success!
This is also the first year we’ve had video profiles of each NOYA nominee! Click the Read More button below to watch the video and learn about all of the nominees..

This month’s Mystery Employee is relatively new at the City of Knoxville, but he’s already learned and experienced a lot.
Hint: that’s a key component of his particular department.
He’s lived in East Tennessee for five years. Before that, he went to school for animation and music production for visual media in San Francisco.
He is currently editing and publishing his first novel.
And his favorite food is curry of all kinds.
Now, are you ready to guess the identity of your mystery colleague?

Congratulations to these City employees who are celebrating significant work anniversaries for March.
Congratulations to the individuals, departments and events that recently won awards.

Enjoy a Jam Packed Weekend!
Downtown Knoxville and the UT campus will be busy with events this weekend. We hope you are planning to participate in the fun – whether it’s the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon (go team!), the Big Ears Festival, the Dogwood Arts Chalk Walk on Market Square or one of the many other events being held. Fun is more fun when you’ve got a plan, so we’ve put together a list of road closures you can anticipate if you’re coming anywhere near downtown or UT Campus this weekend.
