Contractor crews in the first half of summer paved 14.7 miles of City streets in the 1st, 2nd and 6th City Council districts (South, West and East Knoxville).

Between now and late fall, Rogers Group crews will be milling and paving another 18 miles in the 3rd, 4th and 5th districts (Northwest and North Knoxville), plus parts of the 2nd District that are being completed.

In all, the paving work represents an $8.6 million commitment this year.

“There’s a lot of logistical planning that goes into this,” Engineering Director Tom Clabo said. “The pavement management program not only considers which streets are due up in the maintenance rotation, but also factors in any needed utility upgrades for those streets and how best to coordinate the timing of the resurfacing around those utility projects to maximize efficiency and avoid damaging newly paved streets.

“Plus, City Code requires that resurfacing be evenly distributed throughout all parts of the city. Since 1988 through the end of this year, the City will have paved 1,519.3 miles – and over those 36 years, about 253 miles have been paved in each district. The total mileage is even from district to district.”

In terms of surface area, some of the largest paving projects this year are spread throughout the city – Parkside Drive, Woodrow Drive, Mitchell Street, Old Broadway, Luscombe Drive, Clinch Avenue, Cottrell Street, Maple Road, Armstrong Avenue, West Ford Valley Road, East Lake Forest Drive, McKamey Road, and Gresham Road.

Here are some of the longer stretches of streets that were paved or are being completed as part of Phase 1. (An “equivalent mile” is 14,080 square yards, which is the area of 1 mile of road that is 24 feet wide.)
