3,000 Homes Weatherized in KUB Service Area

Posted: 03/25/2025
As of March 25, 2025, more than 3,000 homes within Knoxville Utilities Board’s (KUB’s) service area have received weatherization, a major achievement in the utility provider’s continued efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs for low-income households.

Through KUB investments; KUB customer Round It Up contributions; and partnerships with the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee, City of Knoxville, Knoxville Extreme Energy Makeover, and TVA EnergyRight’s Home Uplift, more than $34 million has been contributed to energy efficiency for low-income families since 2015. As a result of weatherization, energy usage in single-family homes, on average, decreased by approximately 15 percent.

In 2024, the International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology (ICAST) completed its first multifamily weatherization project within KUB’s service territory and the state, further expanding the impact of these initiatives. Collectively, these projects are estimated to conserve nearly six million kilowatt hours of energy per year.

“KUB has a longstanding commitment to providing customers with a root-cause solution for high utility usage,” said Gabriel J. Bolas II, KUB President and CEO. “This milestone is one to celebrate because it means many families in our community can enjoy the long-term benefits of weatherized homes, offering greater comfort and lower utility bills.”

Knoxville resident O’Hara James is among the homeowners who have benefited from a range of weatherization improvements, including air sealing, insulation, moisture control, new windows, and an exterior door replacement.

“When I see my monthly bill, I can tell these improvements have made a total difference,” James said. “It’s more comfortable in my home, and I don’t have to turn on the heat as much.”

KUB continues to invest $1 million annually for weatherization with a goal to weatherize more than 4,500 homes by 2030. For more information about how KUB supports its customers, take a look at its annual Environmental, Social, and Governance Report at www.kub.org/annualreport.
