Join City officials at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, as they cut a ceremonial ribbon and celebrate the completion of several accessibility upgrades at Cal Johnson Community Center, 507 Hall of Fame Drive.
Perhaps the most unique and colorful basketball courts in Knoxville can be found downtown at Cal Johnson. But due to a steep grassy slope, the courts that were recently reinvigorated and popularized by former Lady Vol legend Candace Parker and the 2K Foundations for several years could not easily be accessed by people with mobility limitations.
But now, a wide, flat, fully accessible sidewalk connects the community center, picnic area, playground and basketball courts. The upgrade also included a set of stairs that connects the courts and the community center parking lot. The construction contractor was Design and Construction Services Inc.
In 2020, Parker and the 2K Foundations did a complete makeover of the courts, which feature vibrant murals and inspirational quotes from Knoxvillians such as Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt and poet Nikki Giovanni.
