The City’s Public Works Department is hosting a first-of-its-kind hiring event on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, at the Public Works Service Center at 3131 Morris Avenue, with the goal of hiring more than 20 entry-level Public Service employees. 

Hourly pay starts at a competitive $18, with benefits including on-the-job training and tuition reimbursement. Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid Tennessee driver’s license. 

Conditional employment offers will be made on site, based on applicants’ experience, background check review and interviews with staff.

What to expect at this direct hire event? 

The purpose of this direct hire event is to provide jobseekers with a “one stop” hiring opportunity and the potential to walk out the door with a conditional job offer as a Public Service Worker.

If you are intrigued by the idea of serving your community, working in a hands-on, outdoors position throughout the year, and creating a more livable Knoxville, we want to meet you!  Jobseekers can apply, interview, and navigate through the pre-screening process at this event.  If qualified, you will walk away with a “Conditional Job Offer”

What is a Conditional Job Offer?  

If the panel interview determines you are a qualified candidate, they will issue a “Conditional Job Offer”. A “Conditional Offer” means that you will be hired as a Public Service Worker if you pass the medical screening and background check required to work at the City.  Screenings will be done on site and may take up to 3 business day to get results.  

How long will this take?

The benefit of this Direct Hire event is that we offer much of the pre-screening on site, which will reduce the number of phone calls and return trips to complete hiring process.  This also results in a faster turnaround to assign an official start date.  At this event you will meet with members of Public Service, Human Resources, Civil Service, Benefits, and the Medical Clinic.  You can expect the full process to take around 2 hours.
  
What is the process?

Upon arrival, jobseekers will have the opportunity to talk with current employees to find out more about daily duties, the different areas of Public Service, and training opportunities. Applications can be completed on -site or save time by completing this ahead step of time at the City of Knoxville Job Openings webpage

After the application process is complete, we will conduct a panel interview with a standardized set of questions used for every candidate. If selected, the panel will make a conditional job offer. Those who are issued a conditional offer will be required to complete a background check and a medical screening on-site. The conditional offer is contingent on your passing the background and medical screening portion of the hiring process.  You will be notified with your test results and official start date if applicable.
